Adilabad: In a major crackdown on illegal trading practices, police in Adilabad town seized 79 quintals of rice and arrested two traders for allegedly repackaging and selling Public Distribution System (PDS) rice under the guise of premium branded rice. A third accused is currently absconding. The incident came to light following a detailed investigation and coordinated police raid.

Traders Used Popular Brand Names to Mislead Buyers

According to Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan, the arrested individuals — Gugulwar Rajeshwar and Sheikh Ayub — were caught selling PDS rice in sacks labeled with well-known brand names such as Jai Shri Ram, Golden Cycle, Surya Teja, Madhuram, Deepam, Geetanjali, White Platinum, and Sri Dutta. The third accused, Sheikh Aslam, remains at large.

During interrogation, both Rajeshwar and Ayub admitted to the fraudulent practice of refilling branded rice bags with PDS rice and selling them at inflated prices to unsuspecting customers. Authorities conducted the raids on their grocery shops and recovered 79 quintals of rice.

The operation was led under the supervision of DSP L Jeevan Reddy, along with Inspectors P Chandrasekhar, B Sunil Kumar, and SI Ashok.
